Generally speaking when we are talking about wine it is definitely possible to get virtually everything you need to make your own wine between going to the grocery store and visiting your local hardware store. However, if you are really unsure about what you should get, or just want to make things much easier on yourself you can always just purchase a pre-made wine making kit.
These wine making kits can be found all over the internet and should include everything you need to get started. One of the advantages of using a kit is that they are put together by people who really know what they are doing and will often consist of material that is a bit higher quality than what you might be able to hobble together on your own.
Personally what I really like about purchasing wine making kits is that you can find some that not only include the equipment, but detailed instructions on how to use the equipment as well as all the necessary ingredients to begin making your first wine … generally the only thing you need to purchase is the fresh fruit.
The downside to these wine making kits is that they can be a bit on the expensive side. Where you can probably put together your own wine making equipment for around $50 - $70 (or for free depending on what you have around the house) a good wine making kit will set you back approximately $125 - $175. Still for the assurance that you have good equipment, good instructions, and can be reasonably sure that you will make good wine, that higher price tag really is not all that bad.
What kinds of equipment should be included in a wine making kit?
- A fermenting bucket
- A Carboy
- A Stopper
- An Airlock
- A Hydrometer
- A Bottle Burch
- A Siphon
- A Cleanser Designed For Cleaning the Equipment
- A Corker (optional)
- A Corks (optional)
- The necessary ingredients like yeast and other wine additives.
Keep in mind that not all wine making kits are made equal so do your research and make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck if you decide to go out purchase one. My recommendation if you are planning to purchase one, is that you go ahead and by the absolute best wine making kit you can afford. Try to get one that includes everything from the equipment to the ingredients, this way you know that everything you have is specifically designed to work well with one another.
