Can you help me with ideas for a teacher’s evening?

I am the manager of a bookshop which not only sells "remainders" but also art and craft supplies. I wanted to hold a teacher’s evening and am planning on sending out invites to all the schools, nurseries and playgroups in the area. I wanted to make it a little bit more than just a bunch of teachers coming to the shop so need ideas! I will have wine and cake (or something like that) and am offering 10% off if anyone spends over £100 (head office’s limit) but was also thinking of holding a draw – the winner would have a book or two donated by us to whichever school or nursery the winner is from.
any other ideas to make it more interesting would be great!!!

also, does the beginning of March seem like a good time to hold the evening?

Honestly, even though I live in the US, if the teachers in the UK are paid the same low wages, then a gift certificate of some sort would be more beneficial than a book donation. I believe that if you want teachers to come out that you must give them something that "THEY" can use and not something that will benefit the school.

Are you trying to encourage them to buy books for the schools they work at? You should try to gear the evening around the type of book you think they might buy… Do a big display etc on all education literature you have. Wine and nibbles sound good – you could probably do crisps/nuts etc rather than cake – the wine will probably do the job! The draw sounds a good idea too. Could you get some kids involved too – talking about their favourite books to encourage the teachers to buy them? You should get kids involved I think – just a select few on the evening to give their opinions on the books.

Something like a loyalty scheme- buy 10 get 1 free, would be good.

Also, themed ‘bundles’ at a heavy discount (for example SATS themed, or a range of animal books etc’) would be good because teachers need a range of resources ‘together’ for each scheme of work they write.

Having ’sharing’ activities where teachers can talk over and share ideas might be fun; you could have paint, pens etc’ so they can show each other and perhaps collate notes on a contact sheet. For example, invite them to share activities to do with ‘Harry Potter’ or another popular book for primary school, or ideas on revision for older students. Buying the book is the half of it- after that you need to decide how to teach the contents in a fun way.

Teachers hate going out in the evenings for parents evenings. I dont think you are going to have much luck gettting them out to a bookshop in the evening unless you offer a big incentive.

I hope you get loads attending, but I doubt it. Best to get them to mail in a form to say "yes I will attend"
