some of it has been pretty good, some not so good….Have you ever had any good homemade wine?

I’ve made wine and beer at home… it can be really good. The best wine I’ve made was a merlot. Picked the grapes myself… what an experience. Some wineries will let you take home fresh pressed grapes if you work for the winery for the day.

I agree with the guy that posted about mead too. Mead is a lot of fun to make and it is cool to find a local beekeeper to get your honey from. You can even find ways to spice it up with other things. Fresh berries that you picked or that were in season at the grocery store…. even the fruit off of prickly pear cactus makes a great addition. Do a little research and you can find a whole host of interesting local products at farmers markets that can make interesting meads and wines.

Vinegar homemaking is not illegal I think. But it is made at home by fermenting fruit juice into alcohol and then oxidising alcohol into acid, the vinegar. The production of alcohol is a part of the process and also not illegal so home winemaking and beermaking should be legal, I think.
Just now I have read a recipe on apple cider making on Yahoo answers which seems to be good. I expect a recipe on home wine making also

You already answered your own question. If it’s legal to make vinegar, which must be fermented to begin with, then of COURSE you can make wine.

im making cheap ghetto wine. after the yeast fermenting in sugar water for 2 weeks, it turns out to be about 10% alcohol. so if i only ferment it for 8-9 days, approx. what would the alcohol content be?

Short fermentation is not much to go on. The alcohol content will depend on the temperature you kept the slop at. I will not dignify it by calling it wine. BTW, if this is the stuff you wanted to filter, go ahead. A coffee filter can’t do any damage to this.

I’ve found that the recipes in Acton & Duncan’s "Progressive Winemaking" have worked very well indeed. They tend to use a huge amount of fruit but the end result is worth the extra effort in my opinion. An easier option is to use a high quality winemaking concentrate such as those made by Beaverdale. You get what you pay for…

I was wondering because I need to make a large quantity, and I was thinking of using one of the things you use to make iced tea.

talking about actually fermenting in an open tank?

no..

thats more like prison juice..

not wine..

i got the juice now what do i need to do to make the wine without all the equipment? and do i need to add yeast and how is bakers yeast?

If you mean no ADDITIONAL sugar, they yes.

But if you ferment juice grapes, you’ll wind up with some crappy tasting wine, and that goes double if you use bakers yeast.

There’s specific steps you must follow to make sure your wine doesn’t get contaminated, and you need fermentation equipment to allow your wine to get rid of it’s CO2 without allowing outside air to get in (this is called a bubbler, or airlock).

I’d say drink the juice, and if you really want to make wine, go to a brew shop and talk to the shopkeeper; brewshop owners are usually helpful and enthusiastic and.

i’m looking to make some wine, i have all the equipment i’m just short one thing, i don’t have a cold cellar or a dark room that has a temp. of 15 degrees which from what i understand is the ideal temp. for wine to ferment. my question is, would i still be able to ferment my wine in a higher temperature room and still get a good result? if not, where else or what else could i do to have it stored at a proper temperature?

likely no

you want it to be in a cool, dark location.
if its a little warmer than 15 Celsius (60 Farenheit) it will likely not be horrible, but too much warmer or too much light will make a difference

if you really want to get into it, there are specific devices that you can put around your fermenting bucket/carboy to chill it. the most common is usually used for lager brewing, called a wort chiller, but would work fine in wine making… usually its just to cool your wort before brewing, but i have seen people use them to keep their fermenting bucket cool

I would like to know where I can find a how to on making 1 to 2 gallon wooden barrels/kegs.

Do a google search for "coopering" as that is what barrel making is called

HOWEVER

I’ve tried it, and it’s very difficult, you would be better looking on places like e-bay to see if you can buy any
