So you want to learn about wine making. Well I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you do not need a lot of wine making supplies to make a decent homebrew and the process is in essence fairly simple. If you follow some basic steps you will find that making homemade wine is practically idiot proof. Does that mean that what you make will be any good?
Of course not!
Making good wine will require a bit of skill, a bit of practice and a willingness on your part to at least hobble together some marginally good wine making supplies and ingredients. After all the end product will only be as good as the inputs used to create it. Fortunately you should be able to practice to your heart's content because in most places (in the US at least) home wine making is perfectly legal if it is for personal consumption.
So what's the bad news?
Well as I said above there are rules you need to adhere to if you want the wine to come out in a drinkable fashion. If you screw up anywhere along the way all of your efforts will have gone to waste. The second bit of bad news is that you cannot make wine at home without a little bit of a cash investment – yep I am talking about the wine making supplies here. There is just some equipment that you absolutely must purchase.
If you really want to succeed at making your own wine you might want to consider a wine making kit. Getting together your own wine making supplies is perfectly fine and you should be able to get some decent results, but it is a lot simpler to purchase a kit that is designed for beginners than to hobble the different pieces of equipment and recipe components together all by yourself. And personally I kind of like simplicity.
Also the quality of the wine making supplies that come with the Kits will probably be a bit better than what you can put together for yourself, they will also come with concise instructions that beginners will find much easier to handle than most instructions found on the internet. Now if you do not want to purchase a full kit you should at the very least consider purchasing some instructional material that has been professionally compiled. These manuals are far better than anything you will ever find for free … and frankly they are so inexpensive there is no good reason not to purchase them.
